Police have said an “object of interest” has been found after the remains of Daniel Rooney were exhumed at Milltown Cemetery in west Belfast.

Work began at the site on Monday and the teenager’s body has now been removed to allow for forensic teams to carry out examinations.

Mr. Rooney was shot dead by soldiers from the Military Reaction Force in 1972 and the operation was ordered to find out if bullet fragments would be found in his remains.

In an update on Tuesday, the PSNI officer leading the investigation confirmed that there had been a discovery.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness said: “Mr. Rooney’s body has now been removed to allow some forensic work to be carried out; however, at this stage, we can confirm that we have found an object of interest that will be submitted for further forensic tests in due course.”

He added that police were continuing to liaise with the family and would “keep them informed of any further developments.”
