Murdered solicitor Pat Finucane
A United Nations committee has called on the British government to consider launching an official inquiry into the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane, pictured.

The United Nations Human Rights Committee has also urged British authorities to set up the proposed Historical Investigations Unit, which will investigate the past “as soon as possible”.

Relatives for Justice director Mark Thompson last night welcomed the committee’s comments.

“The findings of the committee completely support the views of Relatives for Justice regarding legacy issues, not least calling for an inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane, the need for Article Two compliant investigations and adequate resourcing of those investigations,” he said.

“The findings require an immediate response from the British government and the secretary of state and urgent movements on the recommendations.”

Director of the Committee on the Administration of Justice Brian Gormally said the committee had “rightly stressed that the independence of the HIU should be guaranteed in statute”.
