LETTER TO CONGRESSIONAL FRIENDS OF THE IRISH NATIONAL CAUCUS ON THE KINCORA-RICHARD KERR CASE

U.S. House of Representatives

Dear ____,

I write to you because of your concern for human rights and equality in Northern Ireland. And because you are a signed-up Congressional Friend of the Irish National Caucus, which we greatly appreciate.

The Irish National Caucus is raising in the U.S. Congress the notorious Northern Ireland case of Human Trafficking: Richard Kerr, survivor of the Kincora Boys Home—a Home for Protestant boys— and other abusive Homes in Belfast. (We have also written to all members of the Human Trafficking Caucus).

Richard, now aged-60, was put in a Home at age 5, and from age 8 he was sexually abused. At age 14 to 18, he was placed in Kincora and from there he was trafficked, as he says, “by very powerful people” to County Sligo and other areas in the Irish Republic, to London and other places in England, to Rome and Venice, and later to the United States, where he is now a citizen.

Kincora was closed in 1980 but Richard’s suffering is as fresh as ever, as is common with abused children. Compounding all of this is the enduring belief that the British Government knew all about Richard’s abuse, and that of other boys, because the Government was using those places as “honey traps” to blackmail the abusers. For example, the late Liam Clarke —for 20 years the Northern Ireland editor of the London Sunday Times —had this headline in the Belfast

Telegraph, a noted supporter of England’s rule in Northern Ireland “Kincora: MI5 knew about it but did nothing, that much is certain.” July 15, 2014—https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/columnists/archive/liam-clarke/kincora-mi5-knew-about-it-but-did-nothing-that-much-is-certain-30434446.html

While three —apparently “expendable” —lower-level British Agents/informers/supporters in Kincora were jailed for abuse, the powerful and well-connected walked away free. Please see below the six links for further information.

Richard Kerr has asked the Irish National Caucus to raise his issue in the U.S. Congress, and I am proud to help because I deeply believe that ecumenism and reconciliation are at their best when Protestants and Catholics from Northern Ireland not only pray together for peace but also work together for justice because —as Blessed Martin Luther King, Jr. and Saint Pope John Paul II taught us— peace is the fruit of justice and solidarity.

I hope you will please respond to this letter with empathy and support. And should a “Dear Colleague” letter emerge from within the Congress on Richard’s case, I hope you will sign it.

If American citizenship means anything, surely concerned Members of Congress — including the Human Trafficking Caucus —should stand up for American citizen Richard Kerr!

Thank you for your attention to this worthy cause.

God bless America and God save Ireland.

Sincerely,

President
