Washington, D.C., September 1, 1998 — Irish-Americans strongly support President Clinton’s visit to Ireland, North and South.

“We are delighted by the visit,” said Fr. Sean McManus, President of the Irish National Caucus, the Capitol Hill-based Irish lobby, “and we love and respect President Clinton for all he has done for peace in Ireland.”

When asked about the controversy surrounding the President, Fr. McManus said, “If President Clinton sinned, then let those without sin cast the first stone. Furthermore, even if the President sinned, it cannot take away the immense good he has done for peace in Ireland: ‘Blessed be the peacemakers, they shall be called sons of God.’ (Matthew 5:9)”

Father McManus went on to say, “Irish-Americans will never forget this ‘Son of God’ from Arkansas who has done so much for justice, human rights, equality, and peace in Ireland. Only the obnoxiously self-righteous and those opposed to the Irish peace-process will cast the first stone. The only thing I will cast at President Clinton are my prayers and eternal gratitude. God bless you, President Clinton, and God speed in Ireland,” Fr. McManus concluded.
