St. Patrick’s Day must not ignore England’s partition of the Land of Patrick

Fr. Sean McManus. St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2021

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

May the blessings of St. Patrick be with you, and your loved ones, this special day. And may his blessings and prayers help to rid the world of this awful

COVID-19.

Hi, I’m Fr. Sean McManus, President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus in Washington, DC, and Chief Judge of the World Peace Prize.

And this is our Twenty-Second social-media video on our One Ireland Petition, and on England’s undemocratic Partition of Ireland, enacted on December 23, 1920, by the London Parliament, with the assent of the King of England.

All my life, I’ve strongly believed that no observing or celebration of St. Patrick’s Day is authentic if we ignore the central fact of England’s racist and sectarian PARTITION OF IRELAND. And this is especially true this St. Patrick’s Day because this year is the 100th Anniversary of England’s cruel Partition.

Back in 1913, a famous Irishman made a compelling observation about the pending danger of England’s imperialistic and colonial partition. Eoin Mac Neill was a co-Founder of the Gaelic League. He was professor of Celtic Studies at University College, Dublin.

He wrote: “It is impossible to separate from Ireland the city that St Patrick founded [Armagh], the city that Columba founded [Derry], or the tombs of Patrick, Brigid, and Columba…” Sadly, of course, history, culture, geography, morality, fairness, and decency never stopped the racist, sectarian British Empire from doing what it wanted to do to suit its own purpose. And on December 23, 1920, the London Parliament and the King of England did the dirty deed.

And now, in 2021, England is even trying to renege on the Good Friday Agreement, which has greatly improved the unjust situation in Northern Ireland. … And that is why our One Ireland Petition is so important this St. Patrick’s Day: “

Ireland, too, has the right to be One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

How could any true, authentic, caring Irish person refuse to sign this splendid Petition? It only takes a moment, and it is free…. And, of this date, it has been signed by over 26, 600 dedicated and peace-loving people.

Surely, you will want to proudly and lovingly sign this Petition? Surely, you will want all your family, friends, neighbors, and associates to sign up?

Please help me spread this splendid Petition all over the world giving all the Irish, and all who respect human rights and decency,  the opportunity to proudly take a stand for solidarity, unity, justice, and peace. … Let us choose the ideal of  The Beloved Community for Ireland, instead of the residue of imperialism, which is what the State of Northern Ireland reflects and represents.

Please sign the One Ireland Petition— share it,  and keep sharing it—in solidarity—in Truth, Justice, Love, and Freedom, in sisterhood and brotherhood. Sign and share the Petition in the name of our common humanity, and in respect for the inherent dignity of each person on earth—“with liberty and justice for all.”

The One Ireland Petition is hosted by Change.org —it is on IrishNationalCaucus.org — and on Facebook and Twitter

Thank you for watching.

God save Ireland.
