The report says Brexit will not restrict freedom of movement

DUP MP Nigel Dodds has said that a new report from the Migration Advisory Committee has suggested that there will be no need for ‘border infrastructure’ in Northern Ireland following Brexit.

The DUP deputy leader welcomed the assessment from the committee that immigration controls after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union will not require any border infrastructure.

“The United Kingdom and Ireland already work closely on issues relating to immigration and that will continue after the UK leaves the European Union,” the North Belfast MP said.

“Concerns had been raised however from many sources, both during the referendum campaign and afterward, about the impact leaving the European Union would have on the movement of people between Northern Ireland and the Republic. I hope those who raised such concerns will be reassured by the assessment that border infrastructure will not be required.

“The DUP has consistent that we do not want to restrict the free movement of people across the border. It is clear there are sensible and practical solutions around the free movement of people, and as we move forward the remaining issues around the movement of goods can also be resolved.

“This report is a welcome reminder that the kind of sensible Brexit that most people want to see is achievable and deliverable.”
