Gerry Adams has paid tribute to Jim Cullen, former president of Friends of Sinn Féin in America, who died on Friday night at his New York home.
Mr. Cullen, pictured,  who was aged in his seventies was a former US army general and human rights lawyer who campaigned for causes in Northern Ireland.
He was Sinn Féin’s legal representative in the US and took over as president of Friends of Sinn Féin in 2012. He stepped down this year.
“Jim was a distinguished human rights lawyer and a former general in the United States Army, having been drafted as a young man,” Mr. Adams said.
“He was born in New York but his heart was in Offaly, where his mother came from and that bond remained until his death.
“He has made a huge contribution to the promotion of human and civil rights in America, Ireland and indeed around the world. He will be sadly missed and mourned by his many friends in America and Ireland.”
