MC CORD IS NOW THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN STOP LEGACY BILL

“I have been explaining for some time that there was only one individual who could stop the shameful British Legacy Bill—King Charles III. Technically and constitutionally,  that is accurate as this Bill requires the Royal Assent to become law. And it’s important that the King’s role not be whitewashed or covered up.” –Fr. Sean McManus:

“When a Bill has been approved by a majority in the House of Commons and the House of Lords it is formally agreed to by the Crown. This is known as the Royal Assent. This turns a Bill into an Act of Parliament, allowing it to become law in the UK.” (Parliament and Crown—

The fact that the Royal Assent has not been refused since 1707 (according to the Library of Congress) does not change the law—because the Monarch can still refuse Royal Assent; that is still the law.

That’s the theory. However, praxis (a word much loved by Liberation Theologians of Latin America—combining dedicated work for justice with knowledge and theory) would indicate that now the only individual who can stop the shameful Bill is the intrepid Belfast Protestant Raymond McCord, Sr. Raymond has maintained a magnificent campaign since the brutal 1997 assassination of his 22-year-old son, Raymond, Jr. Because the killers were “Police informers/ British Agents, the British Government has cruelly and blatantly covered up its State-sponsored assassination.

On Thursday, September 7, 2023, (the very day after the House of Lords discussed the Legacy Bill) Raymond filed a legal challenge to the Bill in the High Court in Belfast, under Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Now, Raymond may well be the only individual who can stop the Bill, if King Charles does not have the courage to refuse his  Assent—and if the Irish Government does not initiate an inter-State challenge.

The U.S. Congress, all Irish-Americans, and everyone who supports human rights and human decency should support the legal challenge by this brave Belfast Protestant who has spearheaded the opposition to the Bill —in Ireland, North and South, Europe, and in England itself.

As always, the Irish National Caucus proudly stands with Raymond McCord.
