WORLD PEACE PRIZE FOR SOLIDARITY POSTHUMOUSLY PRESENTED TO TRUMKA FAMILY… AND RE-NAMED PRIZE—”RICHARD L. TRUMKA WORLD PEACE PRIZE FOR SOLIDARITY” PRESENTED TO GENERAL PRESIDENT CHRISTENSEN, IUEC.

THE LATE, BELOVED PRESIDENT TRUMKA HELPS TO LAUNCH THE WORLD PEACE PRIZE IN THE AFL-CIO BUILDING IN FEBRUARY 3,2016, BY BECOMING THE FIRST-EVER RECIPIENT OF THE WORLD PEACE PRIZE ROVING AMBASSADOR FOR PEACE AWARD.

A most special and blessed moment in the life of the World Peace Prize took place on January 5, 2023, at a Christmas luncheon hosted by the International Union Elevator Constructors (IUEC) at Martin’ West catering, Baltimore, MD.

The wife of the late beloved President Trumka, Mrs. Barbara Trumka, and their son, Rich, Jr., were posthumously presented with the World Peace Prize For Solidarity, which President Trumka had agreed to accept.

And the Prize, which has been re-named the “Richard L. Trumka World Peace Prize For Solidarity,” was presented for the first time to General President Frank J. Christensen.

Fr. Sean McManus—Chief Judge of the World Peace Prize and President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus, said: “The beloved President Trumka was a wonderful friend of the World Peace Prize. He loved that the World Peace Prize has placed American Organized Labor leaders in the category of those who should be considered for the World Peace Prize. And he officially and personally promoted the World Peace Prize throughout the AFL-CIO, because, as he said, ‘too often Labor had not been seen as part of the [world] peace process.’ So, he was deeply grateful for our connecting the World Peace Prize and the Labor Movement. This, now, is an important part of The Great Man’s legacy—and is recognized and welcomed as such by the Trumka Family, General President Christensen, and all true Labor men and women. All of them believe, like Saint Pope Paul II, that, indeed, ‘peace is the fruit of solidarity.'”

The Trumka Family said: “We are honored that Rich’s name will live on, always linked with solidarity and peace because the World Peace Prize for Solidarity has been re-named in his honor. And we are equally honored to posthumously receive the World Peace Prize For Solidarity, which he had been selected to receive.”

General President Frank J. Christensen said: “I am so grateful to President Trumka’s leadership in promoting the World Peace Prize among the AFL-CIO. And I am deeply honored and humbled to be the first recipient of the re-named Prize, “Richard L. Trumka World Peace Prize For Solidarity,” which I receive on behalf of our great International Union Elevator Constructors, and in constant memory of the beloved President Trumka.”

President Liz Shuler, AFL-CIO, President Trumka’s good friend, and worthy successor, was one of the first to go on record over a year ago welcoming the honoring of President Trumka: “Rich Trumka’s contributions to peace and prosperity around the world were countless. He was a global ambassador for worker rights, economic justice, dignity, and respect for all human beings. I can think of no one more deserving of this honor.” (November 8, 2021).

Barbara Flaherty, Chair of the Presentation Ceremony, said: “This is a most special occasion for the World Peace Prize.

We celebrate the Trumka Family posthumously receiving World Peace Prize For Solidarity, and we are honored to have Ambassador Frank Christensen as the first recipient of the Richard L. Trumka World Peace Prize For Solidarity.”
