FIFTEENTH VIDEO

FORTY-SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF OPENING OF IRISH NATIONAL CAUCUS

OFFICE ON CAPITOL HILL—INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY, DECEMBER 10, 1978

Hi, I’m Fr. Sean McManus, president of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus, Washington, DC —and Chief Judge of the World Peace Prize.

And this is our fifteenth social-media video.

All the previous videos—except the one on my Memoirs—were on the One Ireland Petition, which is a perfect response to the upcoming 100th Anniversary of England’s partition of Ireland, enacted by the London Parliament with the assent of the King of England on December 23, 2020.

And this video is also an exception, in that we want to mark a special Anniversary.

Thursday, December 10 is International Human Rights Day—of special significance to the Irish National Caucus for many obvious reasons. But, in particular, that is the date on which we deliberately chose to open the Capitol Hill office of the Irish National Caucus in 1978—42 years ago. And that was the very first time in history that Irish-Americans had an office on Capitol Hill to lobby for unity, freedom, justice, and peace in Ireland. And today it still remains the only Irish office on Capitol Hill.

Our sincere thanks to all the wonderful, dedicated, and patriotic Irish-Americans who made that possible—who stayed the course against huge odds, enabling and empowering us to speak truth to power, and to end the silence of the US Congress on England’s violation of human rights in the Six Counties of Northern Ireland, which England stills undemocratically holds onto. … When Big-Name Irish-Catholics Members of Congress in the early years were too scared to take on Her Majesty’s government, we took our case to Members of Congress who were Jewish-American, Italian-Americans, African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, etc., etc., and they responded wonderfully—in solidarity, respect, and concern… That is my most vivid and enduring experience of America … that is America at its best … that is the America we can all be proud of—the America that stands up for international human rights, equality, justice, and peace. That’s the America the world respects.

In particular, I want to pay tribute to Barbara Flaherty, Executive Vice President of the Irish National Caucus. For many years, Barbara has made so much of our work possible by her leadership, ability, and dedication.

And now, 42 years later, our founding motto—“Ireland, too, has the right to be One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all— … that motto is the ever-growing internet Petition, which has been signed by over 19,000 people.

Is your name proudly on that list of signers? And, if not, why not?

Again, we ask you to please Sign and Share this Petition.

It is posted on Change .org — on Facebook, and on our website IrishNationalCaucus.org

Please add your name proudly to this Petition, whether you are in America, Ireland, or anywhere in the world as long as you are Irish—and as long as you believe in international human rights, justice, fairness, and equality— your name ought to be on it.

Thank you for watching.

God save Ireland.
