THE DUP has been urged to “stop hiding” after failing to attend a meeting with residents of an apartment block damaged by a loyalist bonfire.

Representatives of other parties and statutory agencies met residents of the flats near Sandy Row in south Belfast yesterday evening.

Belfast City Council, the Housing Executive, police and fire service officials attended, as did politicians from Alliance, the Green Party, SDLP and Sinn Féin. However, there were no politicians from unionist parties.

The DUP’s response to concerns about the bonfire has been criticized.

The SDLP’s Claire Hanna said: “The DUP have to stop hiding and engage with the residents.”

The DUP said it was not invited to the meeting.
