God rest Mrs. McElwee, mother of Thomas, the Hunger Striker.
Back in 1981, the Irish National Caucus brought Mrs. McElwee to Washington (and other cities) to lobby
the U.S. Congress to save her son and the other remaining Hunger Strikers. Before that, we had brought
Oliver Hughes, brother of Francis, and cousin of Thomas.
I also attended Thomas’ funeral and helped to carry his coffin.
