THE Irish National Caucus has welcomed the adoption of the MacBride Principles in the election platforms of American’s two main political parties.

In the run up to the US Presidential election, both the Republican and Democratic Parties are campaigning for the adoption of the anti- discrimination measures, which include affirmative action against job bias.

Fr Sean McManus, president of the Washington-based Caucus which launched the MacBride Principles in 1984, said it was an extraordinary achievement.

”It is particularly significant that the Democratic Party has endorsed MacBride in light of the fact that President Clinton opposed passage of the principles in the US Congress.””Our strong public criticism of President Clinton’s flip-flop on the MacBride Principles was clearly effective.”The Republican Party also called on all parties in Northern Ireland to renounce terrorism.

Both parties have sought to make gains with Irish American voters, although it is widely believed that Dole would take a tougher line on Sinn Fein than the Clinton administration.
