Northern Ireland Elections

CAPITOL HILL. Friday, July 5, 2024— Even the very pro-British media is forced to admit a seismic change has happened in the Six Counties of Northern Ireland, and, therefore, for all of the 32 Counties of Ireland.

BBC NI declares: ‘Sinn Féin is now the largest party across Northern Ireland’s councils, assembly, and at Westminster.” Can’t you almost hear the lament in that!

Fr. Sean Mc Manus—President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus— said: “This seismic change has many implications, but surely one implication has to be for the Border Poll issue on ending the partition of Ireland, perpetrated on December 23, 1920, by the ‘King-in Parliament’ (that king, George V, being the great grandfather of King Charles III.)

The British Parliament has been concerned that Northern Ireland is not seen internationally as one of its remaining ‘colonies.’ Yet, its rule about scheduling a Border Poll reeks to high heavens of the worst form of England’s colonial rule: only the British Secretary of State can decide to set a date for the Border Poll… If that’s not colonial supremacy and domination, I don’t know what is… The people cannot vote until their masters allow them.

Fr. McManus concluded: “In light of the seismic change wrought by the Northern Ireland elections, Irish-Americans call on the American Government and Congress to urge the new British Government not to deceitfully delay the scheduling of the Border Poll.”
